Final Evaluation

In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

When creating my magazine I followed a number of typical codes and conventions of existing magazines such as the masthead, the straplines and the general layout. However I also tried to add in aspects that are unique and stand out from other products that are already on the market. Although I added some unique ideas I wanted to keep a lot of the codes and conventions typical to other magazines so as people would be aware of what they are purchasing and not be afraid of buying something completely different and new.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

I based my magazine around the social groups of teenagers that enjoy popular music; although it is aimed mainly at pop music interests it also contains various aspects of an individual nature. The misspelling of ‘music’ as ‘muzik’ shows the idea of rebelling against what is traditional, this links back to the teenage audience.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I believe that the media institutions most likely to distribute my media product would be,

Newsagents
Supermarkets
Digital Publishers
Specialist Music Stores

I believe that newsagents and supermarkets would be the main areas of distribution for my product. This is because a large number of potential consumers would visit these places on a daily basis and therefore would come in contact with my product. Also digital publishers are becoming more popular and are easily accessible by my target audience. Finally specialist music stores would be another place of distribution where the consumers are in the particular shop especially for music purposes and therefore more likely to buy the product as they have similar interests.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

I have developed an idea of who I my target audience will be; although just because it is aimed at a certain type of person this will hopefully not deter others from purchasing my product. The audience that my magazine is aimed at is both males and females and between the ages of 15 and 25. I chose to aim my product at males and females as it broadens my audience and therefore hopefully more people will purchase the magazine. I have catered for this audience throughout the designing and developing of my magazine. I used mainly images of females to attract both genders, the female audience may aspire to be like the featured person where the male audience may be attracted to the female model. I also chose to use yellow, blue, red and green as my main colours so as the magazine is unisex and not aimed specifically at any one gender.

How did you attract/address your audience?

I attracted my audience through use of colour, layout and imagery throughout my magazine. I used a large eye-catching image on the front cover to make it stand out from my competitors. I purposely made the masthead a large bold white font so as it would stand out, the font is also different from the rest of the front cover so as it is easily recognised as a logo. I also used a large red box for the main strapline with a white font. This again was used to attract the audience’s eye and allow it to stand out from competition. The models used throughout the magazine were all young and within the age range of the target audience, this was to allow the potential consumers to relate to what they are reading.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

During the production of my magazine I have gained additional experience in using programs that I previously has minimal experience with. I have learnt more about Microsoft PowerPoint and Picasa I also learnt how to use and download fonts on the website Dafont.com. As the magazine developed I learnt mainly through self teaching

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Since the preliminary task I have developed my understanding of Microsoft PowerPoint and how to use the program to its full potential. I have also learned that the designing and developing of a magazine is majorly revolved around the audiences desires and what will attract them to purchasing the product. Also when creating my preliminary task I did minimal research into what other magazines consisted of and into what the audience’s needs were. When looking back at my preliminary task there is a clear difference in the professionalism of the two outcomes. The layout of the preliminary task is very simplistic and amateur looking; I developed a much deeper understanding of magazine layout and composition during the creation of my main task.
